Why Spotify Stopped Working in Russia

Spotify launched in Russia in July 2020 after years of anticipation. By early 2022, it had gained millions of users who built playlists, discovered new artists through algorithmic recommendations, and migrated their music libraries from other platforms. Then in April 2022, Spotify suspended its service in Russia.

The app still opens, but playback doesn't work. New accounts can't be created from Russian IPs. The Play Store and App Store in Russia no longer list the app. For millions of users, years of carefully curated playlists and podcast subscriptions became inaccessible overnight.

But Spotify didn't delete anything. Your account, playlists, saved albums, followed artists, and podcast subscriptions are all still there. The block is IP-based — Spotify refuses connections from Russian IP addresses. Change your visible IP with a VPN, and everything works again.

Get Your Music Library Back

VnePN connects you to servers where Spotify operates normally. Open the app, hit play, and your entire library is back — every playlist you've built, every album you've saved, every artist you follow. Discover Weekly and Release Radar resume their recommendations as if nothing happened.

Spotify's music catalog has over 100 million tracks and 6 million podcast titles. The Russian alternatives — Yandex Music, VK Музыка — have respectable libraries, but they can't match Spotify's global catalog, especially for international and niche genres. Independent artists, regional scenes, and foreign-language music are Spotify's strength.

The audio quality through VnePN is identical to a direct connection. Spotify Premium streams at up to 320 kbps, which requires minimal bandwidth. Even on mobile data through VnePN, music plays without any interruption or quality degradation.

Podcasts You Can Not Find Elsewhere

Spotify has become one of the world's largest podcast platforms. Many shows publish exclusively on Spotify — from Joe Rogan to hundreds of niche podcasts about technology, business, science, and culture. These aren't available on Russian podcast apps or Yandex Music.

Beyond exclusives, Spotify's podcast discovery engine is excellent. It learns your preferences and suggests new shows you'd actually enjoy. If you've been a Spotify podcast listener, switching to a different platform means losing all your subscriptions, playback history, and personalized recommendations.

VnePN restores full podcast access. Subscribe to new shows, download episodes for offline listening, and pick up right where you left off. Podcast streaming uses very little bandwidth, so the connection through VnePN is as smooth as listening locally.

Spotify Connect and Multi-Device Listening

One of Spotify's best features is Spotify Connect — start music on your phone, transfer it to your laptop, then to a Bluetooth speaker, all seamlessly. This feature works perfectly through VnePN because the protocol maintains stable, persistent connections.

Install VnePN on your phone and computer. Spotify Connect works across all your devices just as before. Control playback from any device, build playlists on your laptop during work, and switch to your phone when you head out. The experience is exactly what you remember.

For other streaming services — Apple Music, Tidal, Deezer — VnePN provides the same reliable access. But for most users who built their library on Spotify, getting back to their existing collection is the priority.

How to Set Up Spotify With VnePN

The setup takes about three minutes. Download VnePN (available for Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, Linux), create an account with the 7-day free trial (no card required), and connect to a European server. Then open Spotify and log in. That's it.

If Spotify was removed from your phone's app store, you can download the APK directly on Android or switch your App Store region on iPhone temporarily to install it. Once installed, the app updates normally through VnePN.

Smart routing ensures that while Spotify traffic goes through VnePN's servers, your Russian services — Yandex Music (if you use both), banking apps, delivery services — continue working directly. No toggling, no conflicts. Listen to Spotify while ordering food on Delivery Club without touching any settings.

Affordable Music Access

VnePN costs $2.50 per month. Combined with a Spotify subscription (which you can pay for using international payment methods), you get access to the world's largest music and podcast catalog for a very reasonable monthly cost.

The 7-day free trial lets you verify everything works before paying. Connect, open Spotify, play your favorite playlist, test podcast playback, check Spotify Connect between devices. If it all works (it will), continue with the paid plan.

VLESS+Reality protocol ensures Spotify doesn't detect VPN usage, so there's no risk of playback issues or account flags. VnePN maintains a strict no-logs policy — what you listen to stays private. For YouTube Music fans, the same VPN connection handles that too.
